Before applying for your visa, you must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.

SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is the database the U.S. government uses to track all international students. Every F-1 student's information is recorded in this system.

The fee: $350

Who pays: Every F-1 student, regardless of scholarship status.

When to pay: As soon as you receive your I-20. This payment must be processed before you can schedule your visa interview.

Where to pay: FMJfee.com (official U.S. government website)

Payment Process:

Step 1: Navigate to FMJfee.com

Step 2: Select "Pay I-901 Fee"

Step 3: Enter required information from your I-20:

  • SEVIS ID number (begins with N)

  • Full name (exactly as shown on I-20)

  • Date of birth

Step 5: Select payment method:

  • Credit or debit card (recommended for immediate processing)

  • Check or money order (requires mailing, 4-6 weeks processing)

Step 6: Complete payment

Step 7: Print and save your receipt

After Payment:

You'll receive a confirmation receipt showing:

  • Your name and SEVIS ID

  • Payment amount ($350)

  • Payment date

  • Confirmation number

Save this receipt.

You'll need it for:

  • Your visa application

  • Your embassy interview

  • Entry into the U.S.

Processing time: 3-5 business days before the payment appears in SEVIS

You can verify payment status at FMJfee.com using your confirmation number.

Note on total visa costs:

  • SEVIS Fee: $350

  • Visa Application Fee: $185

  • Visa Integrity Fee: $250 (new as of October 1, 2025)

  • Total: $785

Budget accordingly as these are non-negotiable requirements for obtaining your F-1 visa.
